Reading the Sky: How to Forecast the Weather as an Amateur Sky Watcher

You don't need a degree in meteorology to become surprisingly good at predicting short-term weather. Long before smartphones and computerized forecasts, farmers, sailors, pilots, and outdoor enthusiasts learned to read clouds, wind, humidity, temperature, and atmospheric pressure for clues about what was coming next.

With a little practice, an amateur sky watcher can learn to recognize patterns that often give several hours of advance warning of changing conditions. The trick is not to rely on a single sign, but to combine several observations into a picture of what the atmosphere is doing.

Start by Watching the Sky

The simplest forecasting tool is your own eyes. Spend a few minutes looking at the sky several times a day and ask three questions:

What are the clouds doing? Where are they coming from? Are they changing?

Clouds are particularly useful because they reveal what is happening at different levels of the atmosphere. The National Weather Service notes that cloud types can tell a story about atmospheric stability and approaching weather systems. For example, increasing high cirrostratus clouds can be an indication that a change from fair weather toward rain or snow is approaching.

High, thin clouds

Cirrus clouds are thin, wispy clouds high in the atmosphere. On their own, they don't necessarily mean bad weather. But watch what happens over several hours.

If high clouds gradually become more numerous and thicker, followed by lower layers appearing beneath them, a weather system may be approaching. A classic progression can be cirrus followed by cirrostratus, altostratus, and eventually lower clouds and precipitation.

The important clue is change rather than simply seeing a particular cloud.

Puffy cumulus clouds

Small, scattered cumulus clouds with flat bases are common on fair-weather days. If they remain relatively small throughout the afternoon, conditions may stay pleasant.

But if they begin growing rapidly upward, the atmosphere is becoming increasingly unstable. Large towers of cumulus can develop into cumulonimbus thunderstorms. The National Weather Service identifies vertically developing cumulus and cumulonimbus clouds as indicators of unstable air.

A useful amateur observation is therefore:

Small clouds staying small = generally stable.
Clouds rapidly growing upward = increasing potential for showers or storms.

Learn to Read the Wind

Wind is another valuable forecasting clue.

Notice not only how hard the wind is blowing but which direction it comes from and whether that direction changes. Wind exists because differences in atmospheric pressure create forces that move air from higher toward lower pressure; larger pressure differences generally produce stronger winds.

A sudden change in wind direction can therefore be more interesting than a gradual increase in speed.

For example, a shift from one prevailing direction to another can accompany the passage of a front or the arrival of a different air mass. If the wind changes at the same time that temperature, cloud cover, or pressure changes, you have several independent clues pointing toward a weather transition.

Get Yourself a Barometer

A simple barometer can turn sky watching into a much more systematic form of forecasting.

Don't obsess over the absolute pressure reading. Watch the trend.

A pressure that is steadily falling suggests that atmospheric conditions are changing and may indicate an approaching low-pressure system or other disturbance. Rising pressure commonly accompanies improving or stabilizing conditions, although local weather patterns matter.

NOAA specifically recommends amateur observers record barometric pressure, temperature, humidity, wind direction, and other observations over time. Comparing those measurements with subsequent weather helps observers discover patterns specific to their location.

Your notebook might contain entries such as:

8 a.m.: 58°F, pressure falling, light southeast wind, high cirrus increasing.
Noon: 64°F, pressure still falling, clouds thickening.
4 p.m.: 67°F, wind shifting south, overcast.
7 p.m.: rain begins.

After dozens of observations, patterns begin to emerge.

Watch the Pressure Trend, Not Just the Number

One of the most useful amateur habits is to record the barometer at approximately the same times every day.

A pressure of 30.10 inches of mercury doesn't tell you much by itself. But if it was 30.30 yesterday morning, 30.20 this morning, and 30.10 this afternoon, the downward trend is significant.

Conversely, if pressure has bottomed out and begins rising while clouds are breaking and winds are shifting, improving weather may be arriving.

Elevation complicates pressure readings, which is why official weather observations are adjusted to a common sea-level reference. NOAA notes that pressure decreases with elevation, roughly one inch of mercury per 1,000 feet as a rule of thumb.

For an amateur forecast, consistency is more important than achieving perfect meteorological measurements.

Feel the Air

Temperature and humidity provide another set of clues.

A warm, humid afternoon with rapidly growing cumulus clouds can be a very different setup from a cool, dry afternoon with the same amount of cloud cover.

Pay attention to how the air feels:

  • Does the air suddenly become warmer?
  • Does humidity increase noticeably?
  • Does a cool breeze arrive?
  • Does the wind become gusty?
  • Does the temperature fall rapidly around sunset?
  • Does the air feel unusually still and damp?

None of these observations is conclusive by itself. But when several occur together, they can reveal that one air mass is being replaced by another.

Watch the Clouds Move

Cloud movement provides an especially interesting lesson for sky watchers because clouds at different elevations can move in different directions.

Look at high cirrus, middle-level clouds, and lower clouds separately. If possible, photograph the sky every 15 or 30 minutes from the same location.

You may discover that high clouds are moving rapidly from one direction while lower clouds move from another. This is evidence of wind shear—the winds are changing with altitude.

Cloud motion has long been an important part of weather observation. The National Weather Service's historical cloud-observation system incorporated cloud type, amount, and movement into the broader picture used to analyze weather systems.

Learn the Language of Approaching Storms

Thunderstorms provide some of the most dramatic visual forecasting clues.

A growing cumulonimbus cloud can develop a towering vertical structure, sometimes eventually producing an anvil-shaped top. Darkening skies, rapidly increasing cloud growth, gusty winds, and distant thunder are all reasons to pay attention.

Some storm structures deserve particular caution. A shelf cloud is a low, horizontal feature associated with a thunderstorm gust front and can mark the arrival of strong outflow winds.

A rotating wall cloud is a much more serious feature. The National Weather Service notes that persistent rotation and rapid vertical motion in a wall cloud can precede strong or violent tornadoes.

Amateur forecasting should never become an excuse for taking risks. If severe weather is approaching, the goal is to get indoors—not to obtain a better view.

Use the Weather Forecast as a Second Opinion

Amateur forecasting works best when it complements, rather than replaces, professional forecasting.

Before making your own prediction, look at the official forecast. Then go outside and observe the actual atmosphere. Ask yourself:

Does what I'm seeing agree with the forecast?

If the forecast calls for increasing clouds tomorrow and you are already seeing high clouds thickening this evening, the observations support it.

If the forecast calls for a quiet afternoon but towering cumulus clouds are rapidly developing nearby, you have identified something worth watching.

Over time, you can compare your predictions with professional forecasts and with what actually happened.

Keep a Weather Journal

This may be the single most effective way to improve.

Record observations at regular intervals:

NOAA encourages weather enthusiasts to maintain journals and compare observations with subsequent weather. The organization notes that changes in temperature, humidity, pressure, and wind direction can provide clues about approaching weather.

After a few months, you'll have something better than a collection of weather sayings: you'll have your own local database.

Build a Simple Forecast

Eventually, try making a forecast without looking at the official prediction.

For example:

Current conditions:
Pressure falling. High clouds increasing. Temperature rising. Southeast wind strengthening.

Interpretation:
A weather system may be approaching.

Forecast:
Increasing clouds during the next several hours, followed by a chance of rain later today or tonight.

Then write down whether you were right.

Don't worry about being wrong. A failed forecast is useful because you can go back and determine which clue you misinterpreted.

Learn the Exceptions

Weather folklore contains plenty of useful observations, but it also contains plenty of oversimplification.

A red sunrise does not guarantee a storm. A particular cloud does not automatically mean rain. A falling barometer does not tell you precisely when precipitation will begin.

Weather is a three-dimensional, constantly moving system. Local geography, season, terrain, nearby bodies of water, and the larger-scale weather pattern can all change the meaning of an individual observation.

The best amateur forecasters therefore avoid rules such as “this cloud always means rain.” Instead, they learn to think in terms of probability and trends.

From Sky Watcher to Weather Observer

The real skill is learning to connect observations.

A barometer falling slowly is interesting.

High clouds increasing is interesting.

The wind shifting is interesting.

Humidity rising is interesting.

But when all four happen together, they tell a much stronger story.

That's essentially what weather forecasting is: collecting observations, identifying patterns, understanding how the atmosphere is changing, and estimating what will happen next.

The sky is already giving you a forecast. The trick is learning how to read it.
