You don't need a paper mill to make your own paper. With some scrap paper, water, a blender, and a simple screen, you can turn discarded sheets into handmade paper for cards, artwork, journals, crafts, and other projects.
Making paper at home is an easy introduction to an ancient craft. The equipment can be improvised from inexpensive materials, and once you understand the basic process, you can experiment with colors, textures, flower petals, fibers, and different types of recycled paper.
What You’ll Need
For a basic first attempt, gather:
- Scrap paper
- Water
- A blender
- A shallow plastic tub or tray
- A papermaking mold and deckle
- Felt, old towels, or absorbent cotton cloth
- A sponge
- A flat board
- Heavy books or other weights
- Scissors or a utility knife
A mold and deckle is the basic tool used to form a sheet. The mold is a frame with a fine screen stretched across it. The deckle is a second frame that sits on top of the mold and helps define the edges of the paper.
You can purchase a mold and deckle, but a simple one can also be made from inexpensive wooden frames and fine screen material.
Making a Simple Mold and Deckle
One easy approach is to use two similar-sized wooden picture frames.
Remove the glass and backing from both frames. Stretch fine plastic or stainless-steel screen tightly across one frame and staple it securely around the edges. This becomes the mold.
Leave the second frame open. It becomes the deckle.
Cover or smooth any sharp edges before using the frames around water.
For a first project, don't worry about making a perfect professional-quality mold. The goal is simply to create a reasonably flat screen that will allow water to drain while retaining the paper fibers.
Step 1: Prepare Your Paper
Tear your scrap paper into small pieces, roughly the size of a postage stamp.
Remove staples, plastic windows, tape, glossy coatings, and other materials that aren't ordinary paper.
Place the pieces in a container and cover them generously with water.
Allow the paper to soak for several hours. Soaking overnight is even better. The longer the paper fibers soften, the easier they will be to break apart.
For your first batch, plain office or writing paper is a good choice. Once you understand the basic process, you can experiment with newspapers, colored paper, tissue paper, cardboard, and mixtures of different fibers.
Step 2: Turn the Paper Into Pulp
Put a handful of soaked paper into a blender and add plenty of water.
Blend in short bursts until the paper has broken down into a loose pulp. The consistency should resemble a thin, fibrous slurry rather than a solid paste.
You don't need to make the pulp completely smooth. Some visible fibers can give the finished paper an attractive texture.
Use a blender dedicated to craft projects if possible rather than one used for food preparation.
Also keep the blender and its electrical connections away from the wet work area, and make sure your hands and work surface are reasonably dry whenever you operate the appliance.
Step 3: Prepare the Vat
Fill your shallow tub with water and add some of the pulp.
The exact proportions aren't critical. You want enough pulp suspended throughout the water for the mold to collect a visible layer of fibers, but not so much that the mixture becomes excessively thick.
Stir the vat before forming each sheet. The fibers will gradually settle toward the bottom.
The concentration of pulp in the vat is one of the variables you can adjust as you gain experience. More pulp generally produces thicker sheets, while a more diluted mixture produces thinner paper.
Step 4: Form the Sheet
Place the deckle on top of the screened mold.
Hold the two frames firmly together and lower them vertically into the vat. Move underneath the pulp and then lift the mold upward through the water in one smooth motion.
As the water drains through the screen, the paper fibers remain behind and form a wet layer.
Gently shake the mold from side to side and front to back. This helps distribute the fibers and encourages them to interlock.
Lift the mold completely out of the water and allow excess water to drain.
Don't be discouraged if your first sheet is uneven. Learning how much pulp to collect and how to distribute it evenly is one of the main skills of handmade papermaking.
Step 5: Couch the Paper
“Couching” is the traditional papermaking term for transferring the newly formed sheet from the screen onto an absorbent surface.
Lay a piece of felt or absorbent cloth on your work surface.
Turn the mold upside down against the cloth and press the screen firmly against it.
Use a sponge to gently press water through the screen and into the cloth beneath. Work across the surface rather than concentrating pressure in one spot.
Carefully lift the mold away.
If the process has worked properly, the wet sheet should remain on the cloth.
Step 6: Press Out the Water
Place another piece of felt or cloth over the wet sheet.
Continue making sheets, stacking them with cloth between each layer.
When you have several sheets, place a flat board on top of the stack. Put heavy books or other suitable weights on the board to press the stack.
The objective is to remove as much water as practical while keeping the sheets intact.
Leave the stack under pressure for several minutes. For thicker paper, additional pressing may be helpful.
Step 7: Dry the Paper
Carefully separate the wet sheets from the cloth.
Lay them flat on a smooth, clean surface where they can dry undisturbed.
Drying time varies with the thickness of the paper, humidity, temperature, and airflow. Thin sheets may dry relatively quickly, while thicker sheets can take considerably longer.
Once dry, handmade paper may have some natural waviness. That's part of its character.
If you want flatter sheets, place the dried paper between clean, smooth surfaces and weight it for a while.
What’s Happening to the Paper?
The basic science of papermaking is surprisingly simple.
Paper is primarily a network of cellulose fibers. When old paper is soaked and blended, those fibers are separated and suspended in water.
The screen acts as a filter. Water passes through it while the fibers remain behind, forming a thin mat.
When most of the water is removed and the sheet dries, the cellulose fibers come into close contact and bond together. The result is a new sheet of paper made from the same basic material as the original.
This is why a vat of watery pulp can eventually become a surprisingly strong piece of paper.
Experimenting With Color
Once you've successfully made plain recycled paper, try experimenting with color.
You can combine different colors of scrap paper before blending, or make separate batches of colored pulp and mix them while forming sheets.
Colored tissue paper can produce particularly vivid effects.
Another approach is to leave some pieces of colored paper only partially blended. This can create flecks and visible fragments throughout the finished sheet.
Adding Texture and Natural Materials
Handmade paper is particularly interesting because you can incorporate other materials into the sheet.
Try adding small amounts of:
- Dried flower petals
- Small leaves
- Grass fibers
- Fine threads
- Cotton fibers
- Small pieces of colored tissue paper
- Dried herbs
Use relatively small quantities at first. Too much added material can make a sheet weak or difficult to form.
Flat, lightweight materials generally work better than bulky objects.
You can also experiment with pressing patterns, creating deckled edges, combining differently colored pulp, or producing deliberately uneven sheets for a more handmade appearance.
Making Thicker or Thinner Paper
The amount of pulp collected by the mold largely determines the thickness of the finished sheet.
For thin paper, use a relatively diluted vat and collect a smaller amount of pulp.
For thicker paper, use a more concentrated mixture or make several passes to build up the fiber layer.
Making several sheets in succession is a good way to learn how small changes in pulp concentration affect the finished result.
Common Problems and Solutions
The Paper Falls Apart
The pulp may not have been sufficiently processed, or the sheet may simply be too thin.
Try blending the soaked paper more thoroughly and collecting a slightly thicker layer of fibers.
The Sheet Has Large Holes
The pulp wasn't distributed evenly across the screen.
Make sure the mold is fully submerged when you begin the lift, and gently shake the frame in several directions as you raise it from the vat.
The Paper Is Too Thick
Use less pulp or add more water to the vat.
The first few sheets are often thicker than intended while you learn how much pulp the mold collects.
The Paper Won't Release From the Screen
Try removing more water with the sponge before couching.
The absorbent material underneath the sheet can also make a difference. A smooth, clean piece of felt or cotton cloth generally works better than a heavily textured towel.
The Paper Is Very Wrinkled
Make sure the sheets are being pressed evenly.
You can also flatten the finished sheets under books or another flat weight once they have dried.
The Paper Has an Uneven Thickness
This usually means the pulp wasn't distributed evenly across the mold.
Practice the lifting and shaking motion. With experience, you can develop a consistent technique that produces much more uniform sheets.
What Can You Do With Handmade Paper?
Homemade paper doesn't have to remain a craft experiment.
Depending on its thickness and texture, it can be used for:
- Greeting cards
- Drawing and sketching
- Collage
- Journals
- Bookbinding
- Gift tags
- Invitations
- Decorative envelopes
- Art prints
- Paper sculpture
- Framed artwork
Thicker handmade sheets can have a substantial, almost fabric-like character, while thin sheets can become delicate and translucent.
Turning Papermaking Into a Hobby
Once you've mastered the basic process, you can gradually improve your equipment.
A better mold and deckle will make it easier to produce consistent sheets. A larger vat allows you to work with larger pieces of paper, while a dedicated press makes it easier to remove water and produce flatter sheets.
You can also begin experimenting with different sources of cellulose, including cotton rag, linen, old fabric, and various plant fibers.
Each material produces different characteristics in the finished paper.
The basic principle, however, remains the same: separate the fibers, suspend them in water, collect them on a screen, remove the water, and allow the fibers to bond together.
From Scrap Paper to Something New
Making paper at home is a simple process, but it reveals something fascinating about an everyday material.
A pile of unwanted paper can be torn apart, soaked, reduced to pulp, and transformed into an entirely new sheet. Every variable—from the original paper and the amount of pulp to the pressing and drying methods—can change the result.
Your first sheets probably won't be perfect. They may be uneven, wrinkled, too thick, or full of holes.
That's part of learning the craft.
With a little practice, that same basic setup can produce distinctive handmade paper with its own texture, color, and character—and turn an ordinary pile of scraps into something worth keeping.
